Kilkenny Cookery School is run by husband and wife team, chefs Neil and Mary McEvoy.

Our courses range from afternoon tea making workshops, to children’s pasta making courses, fish dishes, delicious desserts – and lots more besides.

In 2015 we set up the only dedicated cookery school in the city of Kilkenny. Our aim is to teach the people of Kilkenny how to cook and share our life-long passion for food.

Mary spent her childhood tugging at her mother’s apron strings in the kitchen of the family farm in Ballygown, Piltown, County Kilkenny. Fresh eggs, milk, cream and even butter ensured a good supply of fresh ingredients to bake with, coupled with fresh fruit from the fruit bushes, apples from the old orchard and blackberries from the hedgerows in Autumn.

Fast forward to doing a catering course in C.T.I. which led to Mary being accepted into the CERT run Professional Cookery course, during which time she was working at the busy restaurant The Reginald in Waterford city. A great influence on Mary at this time was Chef John Savage, a source of inspiration and encouragement to her.

On completion of the course and having passed with flying colours, Mary embarked on the next stage of her professional career. Jobs with Chef Tommy Donovan in Longfields Hotel and Number 10 restaurant, Chef Seamus Commons in Muscat Restaurant, Longfields again and l’Ecrivain Restaurant as head pastry chef with Chef Derry Clarke. Mary also worked in the Miami outpost of Ballsbridge institution Roly’s Bistro during the opening and initial early stages of operation. Next for Mary was a move to the Ormonde Hotel in Kilkenny City. Mary progressed to the position of head pastry chef during her eight years there.

“Amongst many awards won by Mary, including awards for cooking and cake decorating, was the overall gold medal in Catex with Chef Seamus Commons.”

When they are not teaching people to cook, Neil and Mary can be found running their successful coffee shop and cake making business A Slice of Heaven. This is next door to the cookery school and makes a lovely place to soak up the learning atmosphere and treat your self to their delicious cakes and desserts.
